Exchange Students

Have you ever dreamed of living and studying abroad? Have you ever wanted to get to know a different culture, meet new friends and learn another language? If so, then our exchange programmes are exactly what you are looking for!

CityU has exchange links with over 200 partners worldwide. We have exchange programmes with universities in Europe, North and South America, Australia and the Asia-Pacific Region. We receive more than 400 students per year for exchange study.

Step 1: Before you apply as an Exchange Student

The University welcomes applications from exchange students. Before you apply as an exchange student, please check with your home institution to see if CityU is an exchange partner.

Step 2: Check the application procedures

If an agreement has been established, consult your academic advisor on the suitability of the proposed exchange study and related procedures. Participating students shall be selected by their home institution for approval by the respective academic departments of CityU. Students are expected to:

  • meet the minimum academic "good standing" requirement of the host institution
  • obtain TOEFL 213 (computer-based test), IELTS 6.5 or above, Chinese Mainland's College English Test Band 6 or above, or other equivalent English qualifications, if English is not the medium of instruction at your home institution.

Step 3: When and how to apply

Partner institutions are asked to send the application materials of exchange students to CityU by 15 May for Semester A enrolment (September Entry) and 30 October for Semester B enrolment (January Entry).

Step 4: Do you need to apply for a student visa?

You will need to obtain a student visa to study at CityU, unless you have the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong. Consult the website of Hong Kong Immigration Department the website of our Mainland and External Affairs Office for relevant information.

Step 5: How much will it cost?

In accordance with the exchange agreement, the tuition fee shall be waived by CityU. However, students are required to pay the tuition and study related fees to their home institution. Exchange students are responsible for financing their travel, accommodation, living expenses, visa, insurance, books, etc. A basic student budget is estimated to be around HK4,000 (~USD513) a month including meals, transport, laundry, books, study materials and stationery.

Accommodation
As an exchange student, you may apply for hostel facilities on campus. For details, visit the Student Residence Office website.

Step 7: After applying

A letter of acceptance will be issued by CityU for successful application, indicating the number of courses which have been pre-registered for the student. For further details about enrolment and course registration, please visit the Academic Regulations and Records Office Website.
