Application Information

Application Procedures and Deadlines

Participating students shall be selected by their home institution for approval by the respective academic departments of the City University of Hong Kong. Students are expected to:

  • meet the minimum academic "good standing" requirement of the host institution
  • TOEFL 213 (computer-based test), IELTS 6.5 or above or Chinese Mainland's College English Test Band 6 or above, if English is not the medium of instruction at your home institution.
  1. Check with your home institution to confirm if CityU is an exchange partner of your home institution.
  2. Consult your academic advisor/departmental coordinator on the suitability of the proposed exchange study and related procedures. Approval of your participation in exchange study is at the discretion of your home institution.
  3. For institutional level exchange programme, please apply via our online system.
    For College/Departmental exchange programme, applications should be sent to the respective academic unit at CityU direct.
Deadlines
  • 15 May for Semester A enrolment (September Entry)
  • 30 October for Semester B enrolment (January Entry)

Some academic units may have their own application procedures and deadlines.
Incomplete and/or direct applications from students will not be accepted.

Scholarship and Internship

If you are to be affiliated with the College of Science and Engineering and plan to take a minimum of at least 9 credits of courses offered by the college, you may apply for exchange scholarship and internship. Please refer to the website on Exchange Scholarship and Internship, College of Science and Engineering for details.

Immigration and Visa Requirements

You will need to obtain a student visa to study at CityU, unless you have the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong. Your application should be made on form ID936, which is available from the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The completed form, together with supporting documents, should be sent to the Hong Kong Immigration Department (Immigration Tower, 7 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong).

Supporting Documents

The completed form ID995A should be submitted together with the following documents:

  • Photocopies of relevant pages of your travel document containing your personal particulars, date of issue, date of expiry, details of any re-entry visa held;
  • Two photographs;
  • A sponsorship form (ID 995B), duly completed and signed by the sponsor, i.e. the Mainland and External Affairs Office or the relevant academic departments;
  • Letter of acceptance issued by the University.
  • Financial proof.

It normally takes four to six weeks to process a student visa application, and you are advised to plan well ahead to ensure that the visa is issued before you are due to arrive in Hong Kong.

Enrolment

You must enrol as a "not-for-degree" full-time student of the University before you may attend classes. On completing the required enrolment procedures, you will be issued a student identity card. The card is your identification document at CityU. You should carry it with you at all times as it allows you access to various University premises and facilities. It is also an important document and should not be used by anyone else. In case of loss, you will need to apply and pay a fee for a replacement card at the Service Centre of the Academic Regulations and Records Office (ARRO).

Accommodation

As an exchange student, you may apply for hostel facilities on campus. Application form should reach the Student Residence Office before the specified deadline. Please note that there is no guarantee that accommodation in the student residence can be provided because of limited capacity. Exchange Students should be prepared to arrange their own off-campus accommodation, if necessary.

Estimated Cost of Living in Hong Kong

Information on Expenses

Tuition fee shall be waived by CityU. However, students are required to pay tuition and study related fees to their home institution. Exchange students shall be responsible for financing their travel, accommodation, living expenses, visa, insurance, books, etc.

Health and Insurance

There is a health centre on campus that provides primary medical care to staff and students. As an exchange student, you are eligible for such services at a charge. However, as medical expenses can be quite expensive, medical insurance is required during your stay in Hong Kong should emergency medical situation arise. Starting from the 2006/07 academic year, it is compulsory for exchange students to secure medical insurance / travel insurance policy covering hospitalization and medical expenses during their stay with the University. Orientation

The University provides a wide range of services and amenities to ensure that students enjoy a rich campus life in a supportive environment. These services are offered and coordinated by the Mainland and External Affairs Office (MEAO).

To help you settle in a new environment and to adapt to a new culture, SDS organizes orientation programmes that are specifically designed for exchange students. The Orientation Programme usually takes place one week before the semester begins. Prospective students should check the exact schedule of the programme and send their application direct to SDS.

Getting to CityU

Mass Transit Railway (MTR)

If you are coming by MTR, get off at Kowloon Tong station. Follow the signs to City University (Exit C), then take Exit C2, which leads to the Festival Walk shopping centre. Go up to Level LG1 and find the escalator next to Shop LG1-10, which will take you to one end of the CityU underpass. When you emerge from the underpass, CityU's main entrance is right in front of you. Alternatively, if you are coming from the direction of Lo Wu, a concrete bridge will take you into the Festival Walk shopping centre. The escalator facing you across the floor leads to the underpass to CityU.

By Taxi

Ask the taxi driver to take you to City University of Hong Kong, Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon (?/nÎW^'Yx[]N?XXTKN?)and drop you off at the University Circle. When you get out of the taxi, you are in front of the Academic Building and Cheng Yick-chi Building.

By Car

If you are driving, it would be best to contact the department which has arranged for your visit to see if it can help with parking arrangements.

From the Airport

The easiest way to get to CityU from the Hong Kong International Airport is by taxi. The fare will be about HK$350. You can take the Airport Express and the MTR for less than HK$60 but you will have to change trains three times. Ask for instructions at the information counter on the arrivals level. FAQs

  1. Are there any Putonghua courses offered at CityU?
    At CityU, we offer two types of courses, one is credit bearing and the other is non- credit bearing. Putonghua course is part of the BA (Hons) Chinese Programme (Programme Code: 1286) conducted by the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics of College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

    The other non-credit bearing Putonghua course is offered by the School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) on a fee-paying basis.

  2. Do you have Chinese cultural related programmes?
    The Chinese Civilisation Centre, adopting a multi-media and interactive pedagogical approach, provides a broad spectrum of syllabus including Chinese Literature, Craft, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Religion, Architecture, Science, and Opera from the Pre-Qin to Qing Dynasty.

  3. What is the medium of instruction at the University?
    The normal medium of instruction and assessment at the University is English. For programmes requiring a level of attainment in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) Chinese Language & Culture in their entrance requirements, applicants are expected to be proficient in Chinese.

  4. Can I visit mainland China with the Hong Kong Student Visa?
    No, you will be required to obtain a visa from the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR.
