The DEC lies at the heart of both our academic strategy and the new 4-year curriculum for teaching and learning. At its foundation lies the notion that every student will have the chance to make an original discovery whilst at City University. The DEC is designed to motivate and ignite a passion for knowledge and discovery in our students, prepare them to practice professionally at and beyond international standards, and promote a culture of knowledge and innovation that spurs local and global advancements in professional practice.
Technology is a critically embedded element in the DEC. Whether using new mobile platforms for students and faculty to communicate about assignments, creating Facebook pages that allow social networking for class projects, exploiting software that enables students to reflect on their learning, or facilitating the collection of students’ work through ePortfolios, technology is an irresistible force in shaping education.
Under the 4-year degree structure, students will be admitted to Colleges/Schools and given a year to decide on their majors. During their first year, they will take Gateway Education courses that expose them to cutting-edge interdisciplinary ideas. In the following years, they will pursue a major that gives them a broad and deep experience in a specific academic discipline. Double majors are possible for those who are seeking greater career choice.
