Department of Economics and Finance

The Department of Economics and Finance provides solid training in both the theory and application of economics and finance. The Department aims to equip graduates with cutting-edge knowledge in modern economics and finance and to provide Hong Kong with the young financial executives, economists and business leaders it needs. The mission of the Department is to be a centre of excellence in research and teaching, using economics and finance for business and public sector decision making in Hong Kong, mainland China and other economies in the world.

The Department offers two majors:

Admission Arrangements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

Applicants holding a 12-year school-leaving qualification or a partially completed sub-degree qualification will apply for admission to first-year studies at the Department of Economics and Finance. During their first year of studies, students will study a broad range of Gateway Education (GE) and College/Department core courses. Students will enter a major after one year of study. The top 40% of students of the Department [based on (i) cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B; (ii) no failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and (iii) completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B, including the number of credit units specified by the College/Department for its required courses] will have free choice of majors offered by the Department. The other 60% of students will be allocated a major within the Department, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by individual majors. Please click here for details.

Applicants holding a 13-year school-leaving qualification (e.g IB Diploma, GCE A-level) may apply for admission to a major offered by the Department of Economics and Finance with Advanced Standing I, or to the Department to study the four-year programme without advanced standing. The minimum graduation requirement for Advanced Standing I entrants is 96 credits.
