College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at City University provides leading educational programmes in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It is home to six departments: the Departments of Applied Social Studies, Asian and International Studies, Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, English, Media and Communication and Public and Social Administration, which span a wide range of subjects.

For students, the College provides an exciting and progressive education that uses a wide range of innovative teaching methods supported by the latest in IT and computerised services. During their undergraduate studies, students have many opportunities to go abroad on study trips, student exchanges and overseas internships. Graduates from the College also have a successful record of rapid employment after graduation. Graduates of the College enter a wide range of professions and career paths including business, education, corporate life, government, media industries and telecommunications.

The College offers Bachelor degrees in Applied Sociology; Asian and International Studies; Chinese; Criminology; Culture and Heritage Management; Digital Television and Broadcasting; English Studies; Environmental Policy; Linguistics and Language Technology; Media and Communication; Psychology; Public Policy, Management and Politics; Social Work; and Translation and Interpretation.

Admission Arrangements

JUPAS Applicants

HKDSE students will apply for admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. They will not select a major until after one year of study. During their first year, students study core-curricular courses designed by the College in addition to Gateway Education (GE) courses. At the end of the first year, the top 20% of students [based on (i) completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B; (ii) no failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and (iii) cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B] will have free choice of the majors offered by the College. The other 80% of students will be allocated to a major of their choice, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by the College.

Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

Applicants holding a 12-year school-leaving qualification or an incomplete sub-degree qualification are generally admitted to the College and may select their major after one year of study. At the end of the first year, the top 20% of students [based on (i) completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B; (ii) no failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and (iii) cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B] will have free choice of the majors offered by the College. The other 80% of students will be allocated to a major of their choice, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by the College.

Applicants holding a 13-year school-leaving qualification such as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a Hong Kong Advanced Level (HKAL) or a General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCEAL) qualification may apply for admission to a major/programme directly and receive Advanced Standing I. The minimum graduation requirement for Advanced Standing I students is 90 credits (instead of the 120 credits in a standard 4-year curriculum), subject to the requirements of individual majors.

@ College Mentoring Course: ALL HKDSE students are required to take CLA1001 in Semester A.

# College Core Courses (total: 15 credit units): Students must take two College Core Courses in Semester A, one course each from Group I and Group II, and similarly two College Core Courses in Semester B, one course each from Group I and Group II not taken in Semester A.

First-year entrants with a Level ‘3’ in HKDSE English Language will be required to take 6 credits of English for Academic Purposes.

We look for students who are analytical, critical and creative, have a strong interest in studying society, and apply knowledge and skills to tackle social issues.

The prerequisite required for admission to Applied Sociology major is to fulfill the College’s requirements at the end of the first year of study.
