Department of Electronic Engineering

The world today is interconnected via a myriad of communication channels that may be either wired or wireless and with ever increasing amounts of data. Whether you are walking the streets or travelling by bus, nearly everyone can be seen checking emails, viewing the latest news, interconnecting socially or playing games. Everyone expects connectivity at any place and any time, but very few recognise the technology or the complexity involved in both the hardware and the software. The Department of Electronic Engineering offers majors that allow these technologies to function seamlessly across continents whether for work or for play. We offer three majors that have sufficient depth to prepare students to succeed in their technology driven career path and beyond, yet are broad enough to allow them to pursue other career paths. Most of the required courses in the first and second year are common to all three majors, covering mathematics, computing, circuits, information technology and computer programming. These courses set a solid foundation to prepare students for their third and final year.

The department offers majors in:

  • BEng Computer and Data Engineering
  • BEng Electronic and Communication Engineering
  • BEng Information Engineering

Strong links with industry have made our majors more applicable to Hong Kong, with educational centres set up in collaboration with various multinational companies. We have also set up the CityU Apps Lab, showcasing many innovative and creative ideas from both students and staff.

Our Target

Computer and Data Engineering major provides students with a strong foundation in the core computer and data technologies. Students will be equipped with the theoretical and practical aspects of both hardware and software. In addition, the major provides opportunities for students to develop independent learning, organisational and communication skills. Upon completion of the major, graduates will be able to design and implement embedded systems and computer systems; and to build data mining algorithms for processing and analysing big data. They will also be sufficiently prepared to pursue postgraduate studies and recognise the need for, and engage in, life-long learning.

電子計算機及數據工程學工學士課程目標:培育專業電腦及數據工程師,教授電腦及數據技術,包括軟體及硬體,重點有電腦嵌入式系統、軟件設計、多媒體科技、數據分析及保安等。

Electronic and Communication Engineering major provides students with a solid education in electronics and communications. Students will be exposed to the latest developments in wireless communications & digital mobile; optical communications & optoelectronics; energy saving, control & power systems; electronic devices & circuit design.

Our education will transform students into well-trained professional engineers with the skills and vision to enable students to progress further in their career path in this rapidly changing knowledge-based economy. On the other hand, students will also be well equipped to pursue postgraduate studies.

Information Engineering major provides the solid foundation necessary for students to embark on a successful career in Information Systems, Networking, System Administration, Software Development and Multimedia Computing fields. Three popular and professional technical training programmes are integrated into the major structure. They are:

·         Cisco CCNA Network Associate Certification
·         Fundamental Linux Training
·         Google Android and Apple iPhone/iPad Mobile App Design

The strong knowledge base gained in this major prepares graduates for further studies or employment in a wide range of economic sectors, mainly technology, but also business, banking, finance and trading in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.

資訊工程學工學士課程目標:培育專業資訊工程師,教授電腦及資訊科技知識,重點有網路及系統管理、軟件開發、固網及流動電訊、以及多媒體運算等。

Admission Arrangements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

Applicants holding a 12-year school-leaving qualification or a partially completed sub-degree qualification will apply for admission to first-year studies at the Department of Eletronic Engineering with an undeclared major*. During their first year of studies, students will study a broad range of Gateway Education (GE) and College/Department core courses. Students will enter a major after one year of study. The top 40% of students [based on (i) cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B; (ii) no failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and (iii) completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B, including the number of credit units specified by the College / Department for its required courses] will have free choice of the majors offered by the Department. The other 60% of students will be allocated a major within the Department, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by the individual majors.

*Current major options: Computer and Data Engineering; Electronic and Communication Engineering; Information Engineering. The University reserves the right to make changes to the major offerings.

Applicants holding a 13-year school-leaving qualification, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCEAL) qualification may apply for admission to a major offered by the Department of Electronic Engineering with Advanced Standing I, or to the Department to study the four-year programme without advanced standing (first-year studies).

Entrance Requirements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements. In addition to meeting the General Entrance Requirements, applicants are expected to have studied an engineering-related or a science-related discipline at a high school or post-secondary institution.

Co-curricular Activities and Learning Support

Industrial Placement Scheme (IPS)

In collaboration with industry, the Department aims to provide students with real work experience during their university years and thus better preparing them for work upon graduation through the Industrial Placement Scheme. Students embark on the Scheme by:

1.

Participating in group industrial projects;

2.

Undertaking summer placement; and

3.

Completing their Industrial Final Year Project.

Students are connected to prominent industrial and business leaders through the Scheme. Around 80-100 places will be secured each year for this Scheme.

Other internship schemes which have been in place for many years include the Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS),and Overseas Internship Scheme (OIS), that offer summer placement local and overseas; as well as the 12-month Co-operative Education Scheme (CES).

International Exchange and Summer Camp

Uplifting students' global outreach and international competitiveness through student exchange is one of the Department's goals. In 2014/15 and 2015/16, close to 130 students were sent out to top universities in the USA, Singapore, Finland, Germany, Canada, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, UK, France, Belgium, Korea, Taiwan and mainland China for semester-long exchange and summer exchange.

Student Learning Support Schemes

Student learning is always the Department’s top priority, facilitated by the long-established Course Tutoring Scheme and Peer Tutoring Scheme. The schemes aim to nurture good learning skills in our students, particularly during their first and second year with EE. Outstanding senior year students are selected to coach students in study through tutorials, regular meetings, and out-of-classroom time. The Schemes have successfully created a positive learning ambience among peers and have been well received among students.

Professional Recognition

The Department offers three majors in Computer and Data Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, and Information Engineering.
