Start Your Career Here

Graduates enjoy a wide range of career opportunities in various government departments (e.g., Environmental Protection Department, Government Laboratory, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department), consultancy companies, laboratories, the commercial, industrial or educational sectors, or you can pursue postgraduate studies.

How Do You Get In

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following specific entrance requirements:

  • E in AL Chemistry, or E in AS Chemistry plus one AL science subject
and
  • E in one of the following Mathematics subjects: HKCEE Mathematics; or AS Applied Mathematics, or Pure Mathematics, or Mathematics and Statistics; or AL Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics
or
  • C in GCSE Mathematics
OR
  • A higher diploma or an associate degree in a science discipline, or an equivalent qualification

What You Will Be Studying

When you start the programme, you will study fundamental courses in four main areas of chemistry: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. You will also study Statistics, Mathematics and Communication Skills.

In senior years, you will undertake intermediate and advanced level chemistry courses in the same four areas. You can broaden your knowledge in other advanced chemistry disciplines such as Forensic Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Supramolecular Chemistry. Through additional elective courses, you can further explore Analytical Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Instrumental Analytical Chemistry, and Photochemistry.

Various environmental sciences and biology elective courses will also be offered. You can also take elective and out-of-discipline courses provided by other departments.

Professional Accreditation

Upon graduation, you will be eligible for:

Bonus Features

You can participate in the Problem-based Mentoring Scheme (PBMS) and the Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS). Problem-based learning is a student-centred approach to teaching and learning that helps students to improve their learning skills. The IAS allows you to receive training in a genuine industrial working environment. The Department also offers Summer Research Scholarships and a Summer Placement Scheme to promote research culture among undergraduate students by inviting them to work with staff research groups in the summer.
