Our Target

We aim to provide you with a solid education in computer networking, system administration and security, multimedia computing and software development. We will prepare you for employment in a wide range of economic sectors in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region, including information technology, business, banking, finance, public administration and trading . Our education will transform you into a well-trained professional engineer who can integrate theories, software and networking technologies to provide solutions, products and services in different areas of IT applications. The programme will also equip you to pursue postgraduate studies.

Information Technology is among the seven areas the Hong Kong SAR Government has identified for focused support, with manpower projections showing this technology sector to have the fastest growth. Even in the banking, finance, business services, trading, legal and public administration sectors, personnel with a solid background in technology are in great demand in this increasingly complex technological age.

 
The programme provides two optional ‘Business Intelligence Minor’ and ‘Law Minor’ for students wishing to embark on a career in the business or legal sector.

How Do You Get In

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and one of the following programme specific entrance requirements:

  • E or above in AL Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics or Physics or Engineering Science;
or
  • A higher diploma or an associate degree in an engineering or a science discipline; or an equivalent qualification. 
Students with the relevant associate degree, higher diploma or other academic qualification may be granted credit transfer upon admission and complete the programme in a shorter duration.

Students wishing to opt for the BEng (Hons) Information Engineering (Law Minor) programme after admission should have Grade D or above in AS Use of English or its equivalent, or pass the University's English Placement Test.

What You Will Be Studying

The programme focuses on four areas: Data Communication Networks; Computer System Administration; Software Development; and Multimedia Computing.

Core course subjects include: Engineering Mathematics, Logic Circuits, Computer Networks, Computer Programming, Operating System, Database System, Applied Queueing Systems, Object-oriented Programming, Signal Processing and Communication Theory.
Elective course subjects include: advanced networking technologies, internet computing, multimedia technology and network security.

Professional Accreditation

The programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Based on the Washington Accord, graduates will receive reciprocal recognition from the equivalent bodies in Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the US.


Bonus Features

Mobile Game Design using JavaME and Cisco Training Course: The programme provides training in mobile phone game design using JavaME and Cisco CCNA network associate certification.

Industrial Attachment Scheme: - In Year 2 summer, students are provided with opportunities to work as summer interns for 9 weeks in multi-national corporations such as DBS, Chubb Hong Kong Ltd, Elec & Eltek International (HK) Ltd and MTRC, KCRC, etc. Internship training is also available overseas, in Canada, France, Singapore, the UK, Thailand, etc. This greatly enhances graduates’ career prospects and broadens their exposure. 

Co-operative Education Scheme
:Subsequent to the summer internship, students may join the 12-month Co-operative Education Scheme during their final year. Selected students work as full-time interns in partner companies. They are given day release to attend classes so that they can complete the programmes within 3.5 years while gaining one-year full-time working experience. Some students are offered jobs by the partner companies at the end of the scheme.

Scholarships:
Every year, some 50 scholarships worth over HK$500,000 are awarded to students of the Department of Electronic Engineering.
 
Student Exchange: The Department provides Student Exchange Scholarships for students to join overseas exchange programmes as a way to broaden their international exposure.
 
Student Activities:The Department’s student development management team provides various co-curricular activities, aiming to nurture well-rounded professionals who can meet the demands of the work market. Activities include a student mentoring scheme, peer tutoring scheme, student ambassador scheme, company visits and high table dinner, through which students can develop their organizational skills, communication and interpersonal skills, social etiquette, leadership, teamwork, problem solving skills, confidence and serving spirit.
