Established in 1990, the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) has become renowned for setting a strong pace for excellence in research and teaching while maintaining close and mutually beneficial links with various sectors throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The College not only strives to provide excellent higher education opportunities, but also aspires to nurture and develop individual talent using an applicable knowledge base that is always abreast and fully supportive of on-going social changes and economic advances.
The College benefits from an exceptional combination of science and engineering facilities that enable the faculty to use their innovative skills in teaching, learning and research. Through the synergy of the various science and engineering units, the CSE achieves and maintains an interdisciplinary world that facilitates a high-quality learning environment.
On the teaching front, the College strives to instil in its students the four Is: an International outlook, an Interdisciplinary background, an Innovative approach and Interpersonal skills. Our endeavours to realise these four I’s are exemplified in the following:
Students will be admitted to the College of Science and Engineering via the Engineering or Science routes.
JUPAS Applicants
HKDSE students will apply for admission to the College of Science and Engineering via the Engineering or Science route and select their major after their first year in our College. Students will study a broad range of Gateway Education (GE) and core-curricular courses designed by the College. At the end of the first year, the top 20% of students [based on (i) completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B; (ii) no failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and (iii) cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B] will have free choice of the majors offered under the College of Science and Engineering (Engineering). The other 80% of students will be allocated to a major of their choice, subject to the availability of places and the selection criteria set by individual academic units.
Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants
The direct/ non-JUPAS route is for those applicants who do not have Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) results, or for those who have those results but also possess other qualifications. Depending on the variety of qualifications the applicant possesses, the entrance requirements and admission arrangements may vary. Please click here for more information.
To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements. For details about the entrance requirements, please click the following links:

BEng (Hons) in Materials Engineering
材料工程學榮譽工學士
|
| Our Target |
This major aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to meet local and regional needs in the industrial, commercial, government and education sectors.
In particular, after completion of the major, graduates have knowledge in understanding of the production, fabrication and service performance of engineering materials, including conventional bulk materials, advanced thin film and nanostructured materials. Working with other engineering specialists, our graduates contribute to the design, manufacture, maintenance, safety enhancement and testing of engineering components, devices, structures and processing plants.
|
| Start Your Career Here |
Materials engineering is an exciting and fascinating subject. Many novel materials have been invented over the past decades and these will have a significant impact on the way we live in the future.
Materials engineering has permeated all industrial sectors. Upon graduation, you can work in many different areas, such as the electronics industry, toy industry, plastic industry, metal and ceramic industry, construction industry and testing laboratories. You may also be employed as a quality control engineer, production engineer, testing engineer, or technical sales engineer for equipment, machinery and materials.
Materials engineering education provides a training which predisposes our students to a life enriched by the ability to understand technical information and analyse problems using scientific reasoning. In the past, materials engineering graduates have also pursued successful careers in other diverse fields such as finance, business and education.
|
| What You Will Be Studying |
When you start your study, you will be equipped with knowledge in engineering mathematics, computing, physical science, engineering drawing and communication. These are necessary foundations for your progression to materials science and engineering study. More in-depth study in thermodynamics and kinetics of materials processing will follow.
With a strong physical sciences background, you will then take courses related to properties of traditional and advanced materials, materials testing techniques and processing of advanced materials (such as polymer, composite, ceramic and electronic materials). Stress analysis, deformation and fracture of various materials will also be covered in detail. There will be workshop training and a Design and Manufacturing Project for you to gain hands-on experience in an industrial-like environment. Selected students will also be trained in established companies and factories during summer vacation. These integrated learning activities in a real or simulated industrial environment are the essential parts of the engineering training.
Every student is required to work independently on a project spanning two semesters before graduation. This project is an independent investigation of a materials science and engineering problem. You might find something new and publish a paper in an international journal together with your supervisor! You need to plan for your career by choosing electives from a wide range of courses such as Computer Aided Engineering, Microelectronic Materials, Nanocomposite Materials, Advanced Thin Film, Materials Science Modeling, Failure Analysis, Building Materials, Biomedical Materials, Nanotechnology and Electroceramics. |
| Industrial Training and International Exchange |
The College of Science and Engineering and the Department offer work placement opportunities through different internship schemes which provide students with full-time job attachment to firms not only in Hong Kong, but also the Pearl River Delta region and overseas countries. Through such placement, students will:
• gain solid experience in a real-life working environment; For details, please visit the website of the College’s Co-operative Education. What’s more, in order for students to broaden their educational horizons, gain language experience and enhance awareness of different cultures, the Department, College and University offer over 110 credit-bearing exchange programmes with various partner universities around the world, including Australia, Canada, Europe, the US and others in the Asia-Pacific region. For details, please visit the University’s website for outbound exchange programme. |
| Professional Accreditation |
The major is the first and currently only Materials Engineering degree major accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
|
| Bonus Features |
After graduation, some of our top students chose to join research teams in prestigious universities, such as Oxford, Stanford and Cambridge, to further their study.
|
