General Entrance Requirements for Bachelor's Degree Programmes
For admission to the University's bachelor's degree programmes, applicants must:
- meet the general entrance requirements, and the programme specific entrance requirements, if any; or
- hold such other qualifications deemed acceptable by the University as equivalent to the above-mentioned requirements.
The grades indicated below are the minimum acceptable but possession of the qualifications in no way guarantees acceptance.
Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE)
General Requirements
Either
- E in 2 HKALE subjects;
or
- E in 1 HKALE plus 2 HKALE AS subjects (excluding HKALE AS Use of English, and Chinese Language and Culture)
English Language Requirements
Satisfy one of the following:
- E in HKALE AS Use of English; or
- E in HKALE Literature in English#
Or one of the following:
- E in HKALE English Literature#
- E in GCEAL English Literature
- C in GCEOL/GCSE English Language
- Score of 550 (paper-based test); or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test) in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Overall band score of 6 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Chinese Language/Alternative Language Requirements
Satisfy one of the following:
- E in HKALE AS Chinese Language and Culture, or
- E in HKALE Chinese Literature#
Or one of the following:
- E in HKALE Chinese Language and Literature#
- C in a language subject other than Chinese or English in HKCEE or GCSE/GCEOL
# When this subject is used for meeting the language requirement, it cannot be used again to count towards the general requirements.
Other Qualifications
Other qualifications may include an academic qualification from a local post-secondary institution or a professional qualification acceptable to the University. Qualifications attained by study at a local international school such as GCE Advanced Level or an International Baccalaureate Diploma are also accepted as satisfying the General Entrance Requirements.
For non-local qualifications, most school-leaving qualifications acceptable for university entry are recognized. However, applicants from some countries may be required to supplement their studies with a foundation year study. Click here for a list of acceptable qualifications obtained in other countries.
Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained in a language other than English will need an acceptable result in an approved English language qualification such as TOEFL or IELTS.
Mature Applicants
Mature applicants are eligible to apply for given programmes notwithstanding that they do not satisfy the requirements for "HKALE" or "Other Qualifications" above. Mature applicants must be over the age of 25 by 1 September of the year of admission and be able to demonstrate aptitude and suitability for the programme.

Notes:
- Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained in a language other than English will need an acceptable result in an approved English language qualification such as TOEFL (213 computer-based test / 550 paper-based test / 79 internet-based test) or IELTS (overall band score of 6).
- In addition to the General Entrance Requirements, individual programmes may require specific subject background.
- Entrance requirements are subject to ongoing review. The University reserves the right to amend the requirements from time to time.
