What You Will Be Studying

The major in Accountancy targets students' different developmental needs and prepares them for careers as professional accountants. The programme aims to provide an active learning environment in which students can acquire knowledge of accounting and interrelated business disciplines, along with the broader skills and essential values expected of leaders of the accounting profession.

Our Target

To deal with the challenges of the new economy, accountancy graduates need professional accounting competencies, a broad understanding and knowledge of core business disciplines and intellectual and analytical capabilities. To achieve this aim, students will acquire an understanding of the social, economic, regulatory and political environments related to business in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the Asia-Pacific region. We also provide students with a broad-based education covering various general education perspectives in business disciplines such as economics, finance, management, marketing, information management and business statistics, and a choice of over 50 minor studies.

Entrance Requirements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements. Preference may be given to students with better English proficiency and have studied a course in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Statistics at a high school or post-secondary institution.

For senior-year (Advanced Standing II) admission, applicants are normally expected to have completed an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of ≥3.0 or an equivalent overall mark, or a credit award. Preference may be given to applicants who have attained Level 4 or above in HKDSE English or IELTS overall band score of 6.5 or above.

HKDSE students will apply for admission to first-year studies (JS1002) through JUPAS.

Accounting Scholars Programme
The Department of Accountancy runs an Accounting Scholars Programme for high achievers who strive for academic excellence and whole-person development. One of the key features of this major is that it invites alumni/prominent professionals as mentors. The Mentoring Scheme helps to develop students’ business vision, attitude, sense and capabilities.
Internship Programme
The Department of Accountancy runs established and sizeable internship programmes, placing over 120 students each year in CPA firms, commercial entities and government institutions. A number of professional consultation sessions are organised, which provide out-going interns with an exclusive opportunity to seek professional advice and guidance from academic staff on solving work- or interpersonal-related problems and to exchange views among interns during the mid-internship-period.
Graduate Employment Training Programme
The aim of the training programme is to systematically develop students' skills and capabilities, including personality development, in preparation for the job recruitment process, with a particular focus on hunting positions in Big-4 accounting firms. The programme is designed to be highly skills-based and training-oriented. It comprises six parts covering all facets of the recruitment process, from introductory seminars and timed written tests to hands-on, mock one-to-one and group interviews.

Department of Accountancy

The Department of Accountancy was established in 1984. Over the years, the Department has acquired a leadership position in providing professional accounting education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and in conducting research in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, our programme is academically rigorous and professionally focused. It is delivered by a professional team of teaching faculty members with strong commercial and professional backgrounds, and research faculty members with cutting-edge knowledge and strong publication records in top journals of accounting. The programme structure is meticulously designed and organised to enable students to acquire advanced knowledge and skills to achieve sustainable personal and career growth in the rapidly changing global business environment. We aim to nurture professional and ethical leaders for business challenges.

Our diverse student activities ensure extensive interaction between faculty and students. Undergraduate students have many opportunities to go abroad for study tours, local and overseas internships and student exchange programmes. Some of our students have achieved excellent results in prestigious competitions in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.
